ACSM

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) advances and integrates scientific research to provide educational and practical applications of exercise science and sports medicine.

ACSM, founded in 1954, is a professional membership society with more than 20,000 national, regional, and international members in more than 70 countries dedicated to improving health through science, education, and medicine. ACSM members work in a wide range of medical specialties, allied health professions, and scientific disciplines. ACSM members are committed to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of sport-related injuries and the advancement of the science of exercise.

ACSM members’ diversity and expertise make it the largest, most respected sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world. From astronauts and athletes to people with chronic diseases or physical challenges, ACSM continues to look for and find better methods to allow people to live longer and more productive lives. ACSM is leading the way in exercise science and sports medicine.

ACSM reaches professionals and the public through a variety of means:

  • ACSM publishes periodicals such as Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, Sports Medicine Bulletin, Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews, ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal, Current Sports Medicine Reports, and the online consumer newsletter ACSM Fit Society Page.
  • The ACSM Web site, www.acsm.org, serves as a portal to research, information, and professional development resources.
  • Meetings present the latest scientific research and practical and clinical applications as well as fitness techniques and public health issues.
  • Through media outreach, ACSM experts provide accurate, evidence-based insight into sports medicine, exercise science, and health and fitness.
  • Books, pamphlets, and other publications present consumer advice, standards and guidelines for practitioners, and other definitive information.

ACSM Membership

The American College of Sports Medicine is a lifelong resource, serving student members and working professionals in more than 60 occupations. ACSM membership provides a host of benefits, such as publications, conferences, and regional chapter services. Members enjoy special discounts and opportunities.

Membership categories include the following:

  • Professional member (degreed or working in a relevant field)
  • Professional-in-training member (in residency or postdoctoral fellowship)
  • Graduate student member
  • Undergraduate student member
  • ACSM’S Alliance of Health and Fitness Professionals (professionals or students in the health and fitness and medical fitness industries)

And, in recognition of their distinguished achievement and service to the profession, members can pursue the status of fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine. (Note that ACSM membership categories are subject to change. Visit www.acsm.org/membership for the most up-to-date information.)

Students are an important focus of ACSM. The board of trustees includes student representation, and each regional chapter elects a representative to the Student Affairs Committee. ACSM’s online Degree Guide links students with academic programs at colleges and universities. Student members enjoy discounted dues, publications, and meetings.

ACSM Interest Groups

Interest groups provide a forum for focused discussion, activity, and debate among members with similar interests. Many find the networking opportunities especially valuable. Through participation in ACSM interest groups, members take part in the academic and professional life of the college and help advance its mission.

ACSM Affiliate Societies

Affiliate societies serve those few professional interest areas where there is a sizeable critical mass of members (and prospective members) who desire a more formal and active role in advancing the specialty area aligned with ACSM. The two current affiliate societies are the Clinical Exercise Physiology Association (CEPA) and the International Association for Worksite Health Promotion (IAWHP).

ACSM Regional Chapters

Twelve regional chapters allow greater participation among members and encourage networking and professional growth for longtime members and students alike. Regional chapters produce publications and hold annual scientific meetings.
