You will work through the course with a virtual development consultant for a fitness business, following the experiences of several fitness entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurs each demonstrate the unique responsibilities and skills associated with their roles in the fitness industry.
The course progresses through four units:
- Fitness Industry Trends reviews the trends and various roles in the fitness industry. It also explains how to recognize needs, set goals, and identify skills and characteristics of successful entrepreneurs.
- Business Planning focuses on creation of business, marketing, financial, and liability management plans.
- Business Management shows how to conduct a needs analysis to build your facility and programs, and it teaches strategies for managing employees and clients.
- Business Expansion demonstrates how to track and increase your revenue through expansion and teaches methods of stress avoidance and self-motivation.
After completing the course, you’ll have learned and practiced the different aspects involved in researching, planning, implementing, and expanding a fitness business. Sheldon Persad is the cofounder and co-owner of Personal Best Health & Performance Inc., a company that specializes in high-performance training and corporate facility management. Persad's clientele has extended to four continents, and he has trained both amateur and professional athletes who have competed at the Pan Am Games, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and Olympics. He is also a selected strength and conditioning coach service provider for the Canadian Sports Center.
Persad is an NSCA certified strength and conditioning coach (CSCS) and National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) master course conductor. He was also integral in founding and setting standards for the Certified Professional Trainers Network (CPTN), an organization that educates, examines, and certifies fitness professionals. For nearly a decade, Persad has taught courses at a local college, where his most recent curriculum covered business strategy and new business development for fitness professionals.
Persad holds a bachelor's degree in physical education and is working toward his master's degree at the University of Toronto with a focus on studying the effects of overtraining and detraining in elite athletes. He resides with his family in Markham, Ontario, Canada.
Susan S. Lee is president of the Certified Professional Trainers Network (CPTN) and is an expert in postrehabilitation training, sport-specific conditioning, and active aging. Ms. Lee is the coauthor of Business Strategies for Personal Training, has edited several technical manuals for personal training and specialty training, and has more than 15 years of fitness management and marketing experience in the public and private sectors.
She holds a bachelor's degree in physical and health education from the University of Toronto and a master's degree in physical education from the University of British Columbia. Susan lives in Toronto, Canada, with her husband and three children.
