Coaching is in its most dynamic era in history. Coaches work with increasingly diverse populations and face heightening demands from their athletes, their athletes’ parents, administrators, and fans. Today’s coaching effectiveness is measured on a whole host of factors that ultimately contribute to the overall development of athletes rather than a season or career win-loss record. Twenty-first century technology provides greater accessibility to information and visibility to a global community. Being a coach is more exciting—and taxing—than ever before.
In this environment, coaches have a responsibility to improve and expand their own capabilities to fully meet the needs of their athletes. At the same time, sport organizations owe it to their coaches to ensure they have sufficient educational footing, philosophical orientation, and coaching resources to fulfill the duties expected of them.
With growing appreciation of coaching and the challenges that accompany the role, the sport community and its partners recognize the need for a common set of criteria to inform the development and qualification of coaches.
That effort begins with a global, authoritative reference point: the
International Sport Coaching Framework.
Prepared by the International Council for Coaching Excellence (ICCE) and the Association for Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF), the
International Sport Coaching Framework formulates the experience and expertise of skillful coaches, administrators, researchers, and coach developers worldwide into an ambitious agenda for cultivating coaches in a more systematic and sustained manner.
The Framework provides a common ground for developing and evaluating coaching qualifications, encouraging coach education and training, working across international boundaries, and establishing ethical guidelines and standards of practice. Through the use of common tools—terminology, role definition, and coaching performance standards—the Framework establishes a seamless connection for the support and management of coaches from the global to the local levels of coaching.
