The Directory of Sport Science, Fifth Edition, is a go-to resource covering the entire field of exercise science. Written by the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE) and a team of international scholars, this book gives readers an organized overview of the sport science field with discussion of key functions, methodology, history, organizations, and resources for each subdiscipline and thematic area.
This book provides a wealth of information on each of the diverse fields that make up sport science and physical education. Each section of the text begins with a general outline of the subdiscipline, from historical developments to future directions. Information sources—journals, references, conference proceedings, and Internet resources—are included to direct readers toward further examination of the topics discussed. Readers also receive a list and descriptions of the organizations working in each respective sport science field.
An extended preface details the history and development of ICSSPE and how it helps to shape the role of physical education and sport in the world today. The text explains the ICSSPE’s relationships with prominent sport organizations—including the International Olympic Committee (IOC), World Health Organization (WHO), and United Nations (UN)—and discusses past and current research projects and movements. Readers will appreciate the goals of ICSSPE and its partners and how each individual can contribute to the growth and direction of this exciting discipline. A special appendix also provides young scholars with a tool for exploring career strategies and opportunities. Completely updated for today’s global society, this book offers researchers, professionals, and students current information to help them explore the goals and opportunities in the field.
This book will deepen the common understanding of each prominent area of sport science and strengthen the field as a whole. Readers will gain a clear view of the history and current status of each subdiscipline in exercise science, and they will receive essential information to expand their study of the field and explore their potential contributions to its development and success.

The International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE) is the world’s foremost international organization representing sport, sport science, and physical education. The council was originally created in 1958 and has undergone several developments and changes over the past 50 years. It is a world leader in supporting international congresses and scientific meetings concerned with sport science and physical education; it is also an advocate for fair play and ethics in sport. It works directly through relationships with influential organizations such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); the United Nations Office of Sport for Development and Peace, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The council serves as an international organization concerned with the promotion and dissemination of results and findings in the field of sport science and their practical application in cultural and educational contexts. Its aims are to contribute to the awareness of human values inherent in sport and physical activity; to improve health and physical well-being; and to further develop physical activity, physical education, and sport in all countries.
