Case Studies in Sport Management (CSSM) is a peer-reviewed online journal focusing on teaching case studies related to the sport management discipline. Case Studies in Sport Management enhances pedagogy in the discipline through the dissemination of teaching cases across the most common functional areas that sport management curricula address, consistent with the COSMA common professional component topical areas. The online journal will serve as a searchable library of cases that instructors can use in incorporating the case method of learning into their classrooms.
The only peer-reviewed collection of case studies devoted entirely to sport management, CSSM contains cutting-edge cases selected by a stellar editorial board of writers and teachers. This online journal is continually updated, offering instructors flexibility and variety in teaching both emerging and established areas of sport management. Cases are indexed by topic, author, and geographic region and searchable by industry sector and keyword. These features make it easy for users to find cases related to their needs and interests.
Cases in CSSM include content on some of the most timely issues facing the sport industry, including best practices with social media, Olympic sponsorship, budgeting challenges in college athletics, and protecting children from inappropriate behavior and harm in youth sport and recreation settings.
Teaching notes, included with most cases, help instructors structure class discussion and enrich students’ understanding of the case subject’s decision-making process. Other instructor resources, including an introductory guide on teaching with the use of the case method and a discussion board, will assist both new and veteran instructors in maximizing the benefits of case method teaching. CSSM also offers flexible purchasing options to meet each user’s needs and budget. Cases may be purchased individually, or users may access all cases with an individual or institutional subscription.
Teaching with the case method allows students to begin to think and act as industry professionals in roles similar to what they aspire to fill. Using CSSM, instructors can provide an action-oriented teaching and learning environment, allowing students to develop and enhance skills such as critical thinking, strategic decision making, creativity, teamwork, and leadership. Chad D. McEvoy, EdD, is a professor of sport management and the graduate program director in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics at Syracuse University. Before pursuing a career in academia, McEvoy worked in marketing and fund-raising in intercollegiate athletics at Iowa State University and Western Michigan University. He has conducted research projects for clients at various levels of sport, including professional sport, intercollegiate athletics, Olympic sport, and sport agency organizations.
McEvoy holds a doctoral degree from the University of Northern Colorado, a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts, and a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University, each in sport management and administration. His research interests focus on revenue generation in commercialized spectator sport settings. McEvoy has published articles in the Journal of Sport Management, Sport Management Review, Sport Marketing Quarterly, and International Journal of Sport Management and Marketing. His research has been featured in numerous media stories and interviews appearing in USA Today, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, SportsIllustrated.com, ESPN.com, Chicago Tribune, Philadelphia Inquirer, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Portland Oregonian, and Kansas City Star. McEvoy appeared as a panelist before the prestigious Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics in 2008, and he was previously co-editor of the Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics.
McEvoy and his wife, Kerry, live in Syracuse with their sons Andy and Luke and daughter Abby.
