HUMAN KINETICS

General (9)
  • Human Kinetics sells e-books in PDF and/or ePUB format that are protected with Adobe Digital Rights Management. These e-books can be read on a variety of devices.

  • An e-book can be purchased on the Human Kinetics Web site and then downloaded to your computer or eReader device. The software you need depends on the device you use to read your e-book. Human Kinetics e-books are supported on the following devices: Windows and Macintosh computer, iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch), and the Nook and Kobo eReaders. While there may be additional devices that support Adobe Digital Rights Management (and, therefore, Human Kinetics e-books), these are the devices for which detailed download instructions are provided upon purchase.

  • If you’ve misplaced your copy of a downloaded title, this site maintains a history of purchased digital materials in the My E-books section of your account. You can re-download an e-book by going to My Account > My E-books. You are allowed to download an e-book a total of three times.

  • E-books are assigned to you through your Adobe ID. This means that you can transfer library items to as many as six computers or supported mobile devices. Before you can transfer items between devices, you must authorize those devices with your Adobe ID.
Note: Bookmarks and highlighting are not copied when items are transferred to another computer.

To transfer a library item to another authorized computer, do the following:

    1. On the computer you’re transferring from, locate and open the My Digital Editions folder, located inside the My Documents folder.
    2. Choose the ePUB or PDF files that correspond to the e-book titles you want to transfer.
    3. Copy the selected files to portable media such as a flash drive, or e-mail the files to the target device.
    4. On the target device, copy the ePUB or PDF files into the My Documents\My Digital Editions folder.
    5. Open Adobe Digital Editions on the target device. Choose Library > Add Item, and then navigate to the My Digital Editions folder and select the new files to bring them into the library.

  • PDF format allows you to view an e-book in the same layout as a print copy of that book. This enables you to see the book in its original design, with diagrams, photos, illustrations, and text appearing exactly the same as in the print book. However, you will be unable to make any adjustments to the font or presentation. ePUB format strays from the layout of the print book and allows the text to reflow based on the text size and font you choose. This enables a device to reflow text in a way that more appropriately fits the screen size. If you¹re planning to read your e-book on a device with a small screen, ePUB is generally the preferred format.

  • Access to related ancillary products is only granted instantly when the e-book is purchased directly from HumanKinetics.com. If you have purchased your e-book from another source there should be instructions toward the beginning of your e-book to purchase the ancillary materials separately from the Human Kinetics site.

Reading on a Windows or Macintosh computer (11)
  • Adobe Digital Editions is a free e-book reader application used to read DRM-protected Adobe e-books. Adobe Digital Editions must be installed and activated in order to use the DRM-protected Adobe e-books available at this site.

  • Activating Adobe Digital Editions using an Adobe ID allows you to do more with Adobe e-books, such as downloading them on multiple computers and transferring them to supported portable devices. However, this is a matter of personal preference. Before deciding, please consider the following…

If you use anonymous activation, note these limitations…

    • You will only be able to read a downloaded Adobe e-book on a single computer.
    • You can activate using an Adobe ID at any time. However, if you activate Adobe Digital Editions with an Adobe ID which has already been used on another computer, the Adobe e-books you originally downloaded while using anonymous activation will no longer work.

If you use an Adobe ID…

    • You will be able to download an Adobe e-book on up to 6 computers/devices that have been activated with the same Adobe ID.
    • You will be able to transfer Adobe e-books to supported e-book devices activated with the same Adobe ID.
    1. Open Adobe Digital Editions.
The ‘Setup Assistant’ dialog box is displayed.
    2. Click ‘Continue’.
The ‘Authorize Computer’ screen is displayed
    3. Select ‘Don’t Authorize Computer’.
    4. Click ‘Activate’.
You are prompted to confirm that you do not want to use an Adobe ID.
    5. Select ‘Continue’.
    6. Click ‘Finish’ to close the ‘Setup Assistant’ dialog box.

You may choose to activate with an Adobe ID at any time by choosing the ‘Authorize Computer’ option in the ‘Library’ menu.

    1. Open Adobe Digital Editions.
The ‘Setup Assistant’ dialog box is displayed.
    2. Click ‘Continue’.
The ‘Authorize Computer’ screen is displayed
    3. Enter your Adobe ID (email address) and password.
If needed, get an Adobe ID.
    4. Click ‘Activate’.
Your computer is activated to your Adobe ID.
    5. Select ‘Continue’.
    6. Click ‘Finish’ to close the ‘Setup Assistant’ dialog box.
  • Creating an Adobe ID enables you to view e-books protected by Adobe’s digital rights management. We recommend registering with the same username and password you use to register with the Human Kinetics Website. This allows our technical support team to assist you in the event you forget this information for either account. If your Human Kinetics password does not meet Adobe’s password length criteria, you will need to create a different password.

    1. Go to www.adobe.com and click Sign in, which appears near the top right of the home page.
    2. Click Create an Adobe Account.
    3. Fill in the necessary fields and click Continue at the bottom of the page. Click Continue again.

You have now created your Adobe ID account.

  • Go to the My Adobe Sign in page to do the following:

    • Create an Adobe account. Supply an Adobe ID (usually your email address) and a password of your choice.
    • Recover forgotten IDs and passwords. The Sign In page has the links “Did you forget your Adobe ID?” and “Did you forget your password?” Click them for assistance. If you are unsuccessful, the Adobe Sign In page leads you directly to Support.

Troubleshooting (10)
  • Right-click the ‘urllink.acsm’ file. Select ‘Open With’, and choose ‘Adobe Digital Editions’. Click ‘OK’.
Adobe Digital Editions opens and downloads the e-book.

  • You’ll get this error message if you try to download an Adobe e-book on your computer using Adobe Reader. To download the Adobe e-books available at this site using Mac or Windows, you must have Adobe Digital Editions installed.

  • You’ll get this error message if you try to download an Adobe e-book on a computer or device after having downloaded the e-book once using anonymous activation or different Adobe ID. To download a single Adobe e-book on multiple computers and devices, each computer or device must be activated using the same Adobe ID.

To activate Adobe Digital Editions using an Adobe ID…

    1. Open Adobe Digital Editions.
    2. Select Library > Authorize Computer…. The ‘Authorize Computer’ dialog box is displayed.
    3. Under ‘e-book Options’, enter your Adobe ID (email address) and password. If needed, get an Adobe ID.
    4. Click ‘Activate’.
    5. Click ‘Finish’ to close the ‘Setup Assistant’ dialog box. Adobe Digital Editions is activated using an Adobe ID. Repeat this process on each computer on which you intend to download Adobe e-books.

Note that if you activate Adobe Digital Editions with an Adobe ID which has already been used to activate Adobe Digital Editions on another computer, any DRM-protected Adobe e-books downloaded before activating with the Adobe ID will no longer work.

If the subsequent download of an Adobe e-book is attempted on a computer that has been activated using a different Adobe ID, DRM-restrictions will make the title incompatible with the second computer.

  • You’ll get this error when the activation site is busy, or if your computer is not allowing Adobe Digital Editions access to the Internet. Ensure that none of the security measures installed on your computer are preventing Adobe Digital Editions from accessing the Internet and attempt to open Adobe Digital Editions again.

  • This error means that one or more of your computer’s system settings are incorrect. Make sure that your computer’s clock time, date, and time zone are correct and attempt to use Adobe Digital Editions again.

  • This may indicate that you need to upgrade Adobe Digital Editions. To download the newest version of Adobe Digital Editions, click here.

  • After upgrading or installing Adobe Digital Editions v1.7.1 (or newer), Adobe e-books may need to be downloaded again.

  • This is a problem that occurs because of where the My Digital Editions folder is stored.
Here are the steps for rectifying this situation:

    1. Check the file path for Documents/My Digital Editions; it has to reside on the hard drive. In many cases it is actually on a network drive, and that is a problem for Adobe Digital Editions.
    2. Close ADE.
    3. Go to Documents/My Digital Editions.
    4. Delete the .pdf for that e-book.
    5. Open Restore folder.
    6. Open Failed folder.
    7. Remove that e-book file(s).
    8. Open e-books folder.
    9. Remove that e-book file(s).
    10. Launch ADE.

Go to the Human Kinetics homepage. Select My e-Books from the My Account section and download the e-book.

  • Please contact Human Kinetics Technical Support and they will see to it that your ID is cleared in the database and then you will be able to download the e-book. This typically has occurred when a computer has crashed and needs to be reformatted.
