Founded in 1614, the University of Groningen is the second oldest university in the Netherlands and enjoys an international reputation as one of the leading research universities in Europe.

The Faculty Center for Human Movement Sciences works at expanding its insight into human movement and applying this knowledge to health care and sports. In so doing, it addresses fundamental questions about the relationship between mind, movement, and behaviour.

The Center not only studies human movement in terms of muscles, joints, and biomechanics but also sees movement as a solution to problems in a certain environment (no falling, no spilling, walking and talking simultaneously, avoiding obstacles, performing under time pressure and stress). Movement is regarded as the visible result of a permanent interaction between motorial, cognitive, and perceptive processes.
