Track & Field/Athletics

Jack Daniels has advised some of America’s finest runners, including Janet Cherobon-Bawcom (who will be representing the U.S. in the 10k this summer), Jim Ryun, Alberto Salazar, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Ken Martin, Jerry Lawson, and Olympians Lisa Martin of Australia and Penny Werthner of Canada. Daniels’ first sport of interest was swimming, in which he competed at the University of Montana. He got involved in running while serving in the army in South Korea in 1956, when he began participating in triathlons involving swimming, pistol shooting, and running. His success in these events led him to compete in the modern pentathlon in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where he won a silver medal, and the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he won a bronze in team competition.

Daniels is the author of Daniels’ Running Formula-2nd Edition, the best training program for you to get in shape and compete in long distance running.


Pete Pfitzinger ran in the 1984 and 1988 Olympic marathons, both times finishing as the top American. With a personal best of 2:11:43, Pfitzinger is a two-time winner of the San Francisco Marathon and placed third in the 1987 New York City Marathon. He was ranked the top American marathoner in 1984 by Track & Field News, and he is a member of the Road Runners Club of America’s Hall of Fame.

Pfitzinger is the author of Advanced Marathoning-2nd Edition and Road Racing for Serious Runners.


 

Basketball

Mike Krzyzewski is head coach of the United States men’s national basketball team. Making his first appearance on a USA bench in 1979, the Hall of Fame coach has manned the sidelines for the United States off and on for 34 years now. His squad earned the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He has coached the Blue Devils of Duke University since 1980, leading his teams to four NCAA Championships, 11 Final Fours, 12 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular season titles, and 13 ACC Tournament championships. With 927 wins, Coach K is the winningest coach in NCAA Division I men’s basketball history.

Krzyzewski is the author of the Duke Basketball Series Complete Collection DVD.


Nancy Lieberman is regarded as one of the greatest figures in women’s basketball. Inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 1996 and into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999, Lieberman is an accomplished basketball player, coach, two-time Olympian, broadcaster, and writer. At the age of 18, she became the youngest basketball player in Olympic history to win a silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics.

Lieberman is the author of Basketball for Women-2nd Edition.

 

Wrestling

Dan Gable’s accomplishments as an athlete on the mat and as a mentor have established him as one of the greatest champions in all of sports. Gable has been inducted into both the Olympic Hall of Fame and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. In 1996, he was listed as one of the top 100 U.S. Olympians of all time. At the 1972 Olympics, he won a gold medal without surrendering a single point to any of his six opponents. In his six Olympic matches and the 15 matches he went through to qualify for the Olympic team, Gable posted a 21-0 record and outscored his opponents 130-1. Gable’s coaching record is even more impressive. During 21 seasons as head coach, his University of Iowa teams won 15 NCAA championships and 21 Big Ten Conference championships. His teams had an unprecedented .932 winning percentage (355-21-5). He also coached the 1984 United States Olympic wrestling team to seven gold medals.

Gable is the author of Coaching Wrestling Successfully and the DVD series Dan Gable’s Wrestling Essentials.


With more than 700 detailed photographs illustrating moves and countermoves, Winning Wrestling Moves provides high school and college wrestlers and their coaches with all the fundamentals and latest refinements in wrestling techniques. Authors of the book include:

Barry Davis is a three-time NCAA champion; four-time All American; three-time Iowa state champion; and a Pan Am, World, and Olympic medalist. He is currently the head wrestling coach at the University of Wisconsin. In 2010, Davis won the biggest accolade of his coaching career when he was named the National Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Mark Mysnyk was an alternate on the 1976 U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team, and a member of the 1977 World University team.

Brooks Simpson is a champion wrestler at the national level as a Big Ten champion and NCAA runner-up in 1990.


USA Wrestling is the national governing body for the sport of wrestling in the United States and the central organization for the coordination and support of amateur wrestling programs in the nation. USA Wrestling works to increase appreciation for and participation in the international styles of wrestling (freestyle and Greco-Roman) as well as folk-style wrestling. USA Wrestling has more than 159,000 members, including athletes of all ages, coaches, officials, and parents.

Soccer/Football

Tim Mulqueen has been coaching goalkeepers at all levels since 1990 and was the goalkeeper coach with the United States national teams from 2005 to 2010. Mulqueen was an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach for the United States at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. He has coached athletes who have gone on to achieve worldwide recognition, including England Premier League players Tim Howard, Kasey Keller, Marcus Hahnemann, and Brad Guzan.

Mulqueen is author of The Complete Soccer Goalkeeper, the most complete guide available for the game’s most challenging position.

 

Field Hockey

Claire Mitchell-Taverner has been rated one of the world’s best female goal-scoring midfielders over the past decade, with 180 international matches and 47 goals to her credit. She has been a member of gold medal-winning teams at every level of international competition, including the Olympic Games (Sydney 2000), World Cup, Champion Trophy’s and Commonwealth Games.

Mitchell-Taverner is the author of Field Hockey Techniques & Tactics.

 

Martial Arts

Phil Takahashi is a three-time Olympian, two-time medalist in world championship competition, and 10-time Canadian champion. Ray Takahashi is a 3rd-dan black belt and a three-time Olympian who placed 4th in 1984. Tina Takahashi was the first women’s Sport Canada carded athlete, the first coach of the women’s judo team at the 1988 Olympics, and the first Canadian woman to achieve the rank of 6th-degree black belt.

Takahashi is author of Mastering Judo.


Master Yong Sup Kil is a seventh dan black belt, a four-time Korean national martial arts champion (1973-1980), and the 1975 world champion. Since 1994, he has been coaching U.S. national teams, junior national teams, and U.S. national collegiate teams at the World Taekwondo championships. In 2000 Master Kil was named Coach of the Year by the United States Taekwondo Union (USTU). He served as a USTU official delegate to the 2000 Olympic Games.

Master Yong Sup Kil is the author of Competitive Taekwondo.


Krista Austin, PhD, CSCS, was a performance nutritionist with the English Institute of Sport, where she provided services to 18 Olympic sports and the England cricket team. Most recently she served as a physiologist with the United States Olympic Committee, where she worked with multiple sports in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games. In particular, she is well known for her nutrition work with USA Taekwondo.

Austin is the author of Performance Nutrition.

 

 

Shooting (Rifle)

Launi Meili has a long and distinguished career in rifle. Meili won gold at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and set three Olympic records in her career. She placed in the air rifle competition that year and had also placed in both air rifle and smallbore at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Meili has also won the three-position rifle championship seven times while setting three world shooting records and numerous national records throughout her career. In 1992, Meili turned to coaching. She was the assistant coach for the U.S. national rifle team from 1997 to 2000.

Meili is the author of Rifle: Steps to Success, the best book to help you hit your mark every time.

 

Synchronized Swimming

Ian McLeod has extensive experience working with world-class athletes, particularly swimmers. A certified athletic trainer and certified massage therapist, he was a member of the U.S. team’s medical staff at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. McLeod also served as massage therapist to the Egyptian national swim team during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. He has provided athletic training and sport massage to swimming stars such as Ed Moses, Kaitlin Sandeno, Natalie Coughlin, and Jason Lezak.

McLeod is the author Swimming Anatomy, a book which USA Swimming, the largest swimming organization in the world, specifically recommended him to write.
