Tennis

Paul Annacone, host of Human Kinetics’ Tennis Magazine Tactical Tennis DVD collection, comes off a coaching win at Wimbledon with Roger Federer (a gold medalist in men’s doubles at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing) to challenge the field in London. Annacone has been one of the world’s leading tennis professionals for the past 20 years. In addition to coaching Federer, Annacone guided tennis legend Pete Sampras to nine Grand Slam titles and six year-end #1 world rankings over eight years. He also coached world top-10 player Tim Henman (a silver medalist in men’s doubles at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta).

Ron Woods, PhD is a performance coach for the Human Performance Institute in Orlando, Florida, and an adjunct professor of sport science at the University of South Florida and the University of Tampa. He spent 20 years with the United States Tennis Association, serving as director of the community tennis programs with a major focus on the USA Tennis Plan for Growth, a massive project to increase tennis participation in the United States. He also initiated the USTA Welcome Back to Tennis campaign for players over age 50. For the 10 years prior to that, Ron was the USTA’s director of player development, a program that develops top junior players into touring professional players. His accomplishments include eight years on the coaching committee of the United States Olympic Committee and the Coaches’ Commission of the International Tennis Association.

Woods, along with the United States Tennis Association, is the author of Coaching Tennis Successfully, a book that explains how to instruct players in strokes, footwork, volleys, overheads, and serves.

Modern Pentathlon

Jack Daniels’s success in triathlon events led him to compete in the modern pentathlon in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where he won a silver medal, and the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he won a bronze in team competition. Jack has officially coached seven athletes to the Olympics – including Janet Cherobon-Bawcom who will be representing the U.S. in the 10k this summer – and helped many others make the Team in an advisory role.

Daniels is the author of Daniels’ Running Formula-2nd Edition. Whether you plan on running 800 meters or a full marathon, this book contains the right training program for you to get in shape and compete.

Fencing

Having competed in national and international fencing competitions for two decades, Elaine Cheris stands as one of the all-time great U.S. fencers. Cheris was the #1 ranked fencer in the United States in 2000 and the highest-ranking American internationally 1998-1999. She is a three-time Olympian (1980, 1988, 1996) and is a member of various teams including the 1996 Atlanta women’s epee team and the 1991 gold medal women’s epee team. Cheris was also a member of the U.S. World Championships team in epee six times (1990-1994, 1998). She has instructed many notable students, including Margaritaville’s very own Jimmy Buffett! She now owns and operates the Cheyenne Fencing and Modern Pentathlon Center.

Cheris authored Fencing: Steps to Success, the perfect training guide for less experienced fencers and a valuable reference for instructors of this highly technical sport.

Archery

The book Precision Archery, the best book for serious archers interested in looking for advanced techniques and strategies to help refine skills and thoroughly prepare for competition, boasts a wide range of the best players and coaches in the sport as contributors. Top contributors include:

He is a two-time Olympic silver medalist, 1984 (individual) and 1988 (team).
Lisa Franseen, PhD A clinical and sport psychologist, Dr. Franseen began working with archers in 1994. Since then, she has continued to help archers of all levels— including elite archers at USAT training camps, international competitions, and the Olympic Games—improve their performance through mental skills training.

You’ll have to wait until December for the release of USA Archery’s book Archery, but aspiring archers and fans of Katniss Everdeen alike will be rewarded with expert advice covering topics such as equipment, techniques for recurve and compound bows, mental and physical training, preparation for tournaments, and competitive strategies. Edited and endorsed by USA Archery, the official governing body for the sport in the United States, Archery is a comprehensive guide for intermediate to advanced archers and their coaches. Among the contributors are KiSik Lee, head coach of the U.S. Olympic archery training program, and Olympic archer Butch Johnson.

Human Kinetics has also released Archery: Steps to Success, a book that provides in-depth, progressive instruction with accompanying illustrations for each phase of the shot—sighting and aiming, shooting form, and anchoring—for all forms of archery.

Table Tennis

Richard McAfee has a lifelong commitment to table tennis. In his early years, McAfee was a successful player, winning many singles and doubles events including the 1972 U.S. Open Class B Championship and the Southern Open Men’s Singles title. Later McAfee began to focus on his true passion of coaching. He has coached national champions in each of the past three decades, seven world-ranked players, and two Olympians. In 1994 McAfee was named competition manager for Table Tennis at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. This led to further management positions on the international scene and earned him the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Merit Award.

McAfee is the author of Table Tennis: Steps to Success, which contains a unique 11-step approach designed to maximize table tennis instruction.

Dan Seemiller knows table tennis, drawing from years of professional competition, international-level coaching, and his love of the game. Seemiller was the #1 player on the U.S. table tennis team from 1973 to 1983. He was U.S. singles champion 5 times and doubles champion 11 times, winning 8 years in a row. In 1977 he and his doubles partner made the quarter finals of the World Championships--the first U.S. team to go that far in international competition. During his playing career, Seemiller reached a world ranking of #19. Seemiller, who coached the U.S. National Men’s table tennis team in 1988 and 1989, has been teaching table tennis at clinics and camps for more than 20 years. He is the inventor of the American "Seemiller grip," which combines two other popular grips to provide better racquet control.
