Although many Soccer fans are tired of the constant buzz of the South African vuvuzela horns heard during the World Cup, the horns are only one of several annoyances disturbing sports fans. In a recent ABC News article, several sports experts were asked to comment on the vuvuzelas and how they compare to other annoying game-day sounds. Linda Borish, co-author of Sports in American History, points out that the annoyances may be different for the athletes than for the spectators. So while some are annoyed by thunderstix, cow bells, and grunting, others may not even notice the sounds, or simply disregard them as unchangeable parts of the game. Borish states that “One person’s annoyance is another’s culture. The horns that are surprising so many in the World Cup make a sound that fits with the cultural heritage of South Africa.”
