Practice and game-day planning just got a whole lot easier for youth basketball coaches. Go Coach Basketball, the new iPhone app from the American Sport Education Program (ASEP), offers 38 video clips and 9 animations demonstrating dozens of skills and drills, providing valuable guidance on developing season and practice plans for ages 6 to 14. It draws content from ASEP’s Coaching Youth Basketball book, making it the authoritative app for any on-the-go coach.

The app, compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, is highlighted by a Skills feature that provides step-by-step instructions for executing 27 offensive and defensive skills, including dribbling, passing, and shooting. Video clips and photos, meanwhile, demonstrate proper player positioning and skill execution. The app’s Drills feature offers instructions for implementing 36 practice drills for offense and defense, with explanations supplemented by video clips, animations, and photos that visually demonstrate proper player positioning and movement. An optional slow-motion video setting (requires OS 3.2 and above) allows coaches to see every detail of the skills and drills being performed.

Planning and preparation are major keys to success in youth basketball, and Go Coach Basketball makes the tasks simple. The Advice feature addresses the many off-court tasks coaches have to perform in order to make practices and games run smoothly. Game-Day Advice provides a checklist of what coaches and players need to do in preparation for games, as well as guidelines on running the team during the game and addressing them after the game. The Rules feature contains basic information on court markings, player positions, and basketball variations. Also included are photos depicting officiating signals.

Youth coaches will likely be the first responders in the event of injuries or illnesses, so Go Coach Basketball offers guidelines on developing an emergency action plan; treating sprains and strains using the PRICE method; and preventing, recognizing, and treating heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke. The app also offers tips for fostering good sportsmanship and creating a fun atmosphere for everyone involved. In the Coaching Young Athletes section, Teaching Skills introduces coaches to the IDEA method of coaching—the four steps necessary for teaching correct technique. A commentary on discipline will help coaches identify what’s deserving of disciplinary action and how to administer it. In addition, there are seven tips for building teamwork and accountability.

Go Coach Basketball is now available through the App Store for $1.99. For more information about coaching and basketball resources, visit www.HumanKinetics.com or call 800-747-4457.
