Dance Units for Middle School author Judi Fey received one of the highest honors in her profession when she was given the R. Tait McKenzie Award by the Maryland Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (MAHPERD).

The award is given annually for leadership and innovation and service in the field of health, physical education, recreation, and dance. Recipients must have held posts at the county, district, and state levels.

Fey, who has worked for Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) for nearly 40 years, has also served on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Council for Dance, and worked on Maryland State Department of Education committees to enhance opportunities for scholastic dance across the state. She is the author of the new book Dance Units For Middle School, a guide to scholastic dance instruction for teachers and other educators.

Fey also has coordinated AACPS’ Dance Festival performances since 1981. Last year, more than 2,640 dancers displayed their talent in six concerts across the county.

"It’s a huge honor for me to receive this award," Fey said. "I have been privileged throughout my career to work with dedicated professionals and dance students who are as passionate about their craft as I am. I believe we have made great strides in the quality of dance education we provide students in our county, and those strides have been made possible by talented educators who work incredibly hard for children every day."

Fey will receive the award at MAHPERD’s annual conference on October 15, 2010, in Towson.
