Functional testing for speed, agility, and quickness: edgren side step test

The Edgren Side Step Test will help assess the client’s ability to move with precision and speed. Speed is the ability to achieve high velocity (Baechle & Earle 2000). Agility is the ability to explosively stop, change direction, and accelerate again.

Purpose: To test lateral speed, agility, and body control.

Equipment: Flat nonslip surface or other flooring, 12 ft (3.7 m) wide, marked every 3 ft (0.9 m) with colored tape; standard stopwatch.
