Beyond the gym—creative ways to meet physical activity requirements

Physical educators and those involved in the fight against childhood obesity recognize that state-level mandates for minutes of physical education will benefit children, but when it comes to putting the requirements into practice, feelings are more divided.

In many states, classroom teachers are tasked with the chore of meeting time requirements for physical activity. These teachers are already facing pressure to maintain or increase standardized test scores in math, reading, and other subjects, and they don’t typically have the physical education background that PE specialists have.
