Basketball success determined more by winning attitude than skill

Nancy Lieberman explains how to become a complete player in new book

Champaign, IL—Tamika Catchings and Angel McCoughtry may be talented on the court, but basketball legend Nancy Lieberman says their winning attitude, not just their physical abilities, propelled them to basketball stardom. “You need to have the whole package—attitude, ability, desire, and effort,” Lieberman says. “That’s the attitude it takes for you to get to the next level. All great female basketball players share this goal to be the best.”

In the new edition of her book, Basketball for Women (Human Kinetics, 2011), Lieberman shares what she has learned throughout her legendary basketball career and explains that striving for greatness means never backing down from challenges no matter the obstacle. “Accepting the possibility of failure will take away your need to use excuses and explanations,” Lieberman says. “I have a mantra: No excuses, no explanations. You must have accountability in whatever you choose to do.”

According to Lieberman, players often put limitations on themselves and don’t push past fear to find out just how good they really can be. Hard work, discipline, and training reap rewards on the court, and successful players work on their skills in all areas, not just their strengths. “You will maximize your game according to the amount of time you are willing to invest,” Lieberman explains. “Great players never become great in one season. It takes years of effort, determination, and practice.”

In Basketball for Women, Lieberman covers shooting technique, defense, passing, and training she has used throughout her extensive career. The book includes more than 100 drills for player development and plays for offensive, defensive, and special situations that can be implemented into today’s fast-paced game.

“This book is my way of sharing what I have learned and motivating the next generation of young players and coaches, providing them with the best and latest instruction available for their growth,” says Lieberman.
