Though this year’s Open Championship is being played at at Muirfield Golf Links in Scotland, the major unofficially tees off with a traditional South African Braai, hosted by Black Knight International in honor of Gary Player. This year marks the 54th anniversary of Player’s first career major win, ironically at this same Muirfield course. It’s also the 60th anniversary of Player becoming a pro golfer in 1953. Though Player has nine major victories to his name, he’s made an equally large on and off the golf course. His Black Knight International company has substantial interests in golf course design and golf real estate.
As for the actual Open Championship, the tournament is expected to bring more than $100 million in economic impact to the East Lothian and Edinburgh regional economy. The total is based on forecasted attendance of more than 170,000 spectators. It’s safe to say a lot has changed since Player won his first Open Championship back in 1959.
