ACSM recently released survey results to predict the top 10 fitness trends for 2011. (See the full ACSM release here.)
I was pleased to see that at Human Kinetics, we’re ahead of the curve. Better yet, in some areas, we have been for quite some time. We have books, DVDs, online courses, and other resources to help fitness professionals deliver programs to their clients in 8 of the 10 top areas for 2011! Take a look at our report card:
Educated and experienced fitness professionals. This area is of special interest to me because of my background, but also because the opportunity to educate professionals through continuing education is what originally brought me to Human Kinetics. HK created the CSCS Online Review series in 2002 and updated it in 2008. We also have a pre-certification course for the Aquatic Exercise Association and numerous other continuing education courses delivered through our Online Education Center.
Strength Training. We publish one of the best-selling books of all time on this topic, Strength Training Anatomy. We’ve teamed up with the NSCA through three editions (the first one came out in 1994) of the key textbook for any serious strength and conditioning professional, Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning. A look through our Strength and Conditioning store quickly shows that when it comes to resistance training, we’re raising the bar (pun intended—sorry, I couldn’t help it).
Children and Obesity. Our Health, PE, Recreation, and Dance division leads the way in this area. Thousands of school districts, schools, and the states of Texas, Delaware, Georgia, North Carolina, and California are using the Fitnessgram assessment tool. More than 45,000 Fitnessgram licenses and more than 105,000 copies of the test administration manual have been sold.
Personal Training. Again partnering with NSCA, we’ve published NSCA’s Essentials of Personal Training, with a second edition planned for a late 2011 release. Beyond this certification resource, we have dozens of other tools that can be found in our Personal Training store for personal trainers who want to become more proficient at their craft.
Core Training. Geared toward fitness professionals who want to help their clients build core strength, Core Assessment and Training includes a book filled with protocols and programs, a DVD that demonstrates proper technique, and an accompanying online course that offers CEUs/CECs from many professional organizations. For people to use on their own, we have a number of resources for building core workouts, including recent releases Abs Revealed and Next Level Pilates.
Exercise and Weight Loss. Our Active Living Every Day and Healthy Eating Every Day programs encourage people to make small changes that add up to make a big difference. If you’re looking to offer a program to get sedentary adults moving, I highly recommend you look into our newly revised Active Living Every Day program that is based on updated research, sharpened motivation strategies, and an accelerated action plan.
Functional Fitness. Our book Functional Fitness for Older Adults is specifically designed for professionals working with older adults who are unable to perform activities of daily living because of poor functional fitness. For those working with older adults in better condition, Fitness Professional’s Guide to Strength Training Older Adults will help you keep your clients in shape well into their later years.
I hope you’ll take a few moments as the calendar turns to 2011 to reflect on fitness goals for your clients (or even for yourself!). Then click on some of the links in this blog to see the products first-hand; you’ll soon agree that HK is indeed ahead of the curve.
