HUMAN KINETICS

I am attempting to install MAPS, but there are errors. What do I do?

Macintosh

You receive the following terminal window message when attempting to install the MAPS software:

InstallShield Wizard

Initializing InstallShield Wizard...

Searching for Java(tm) Virtual Machine...

........................A suitable JVM could not be found. Please run the program again using the option -is:javahome

This appears to happen on machines that have the J2SE 5.0 update installed. Setting the Java 5 preferences to look to Java 1.4.2 per Apple’s recommendation does not resolve the problem.

To get the installer to launch, you must manually tell it where to find the Java VM. Do this by opening Applications/Utilities/Terminal and issuing the following command line (this command IS case sensitive; to better convey spaces you will see the text (space); do not type the word “space”; you need to just press the space bar):

/Volumes/MAPS\(Space)Inventory/MAPS_Install.command(Space)-is:javahome(Space)

/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.4.2/Home;(Space)exit

After installation is complete MAPS appears to run without any need to modify the Java 5 preferences.

Windows

Java Error

If you are receiving a Java error notification while trying to install your MAPS software, try the following:

On the CD there is a MAPS 1.0 Java Tools folder. Run the J2SDK-~1.exe file in this folder. Reboot your computer and try installing the MAPS software again.

If this does not correct the problem, copy the javaw.exe file from C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_07\bin to C:\. Then rerun the installer.

Javaw.exe Error

------------------------------------------

If you open the Control Panel on your machine and launch the Add/Remove Programs panel, see if you have Java 5 installed on your machine.

If you do, uninstall that as well as the MAPS software. Also delete the Javaw.exe file from C:\, and reboot your computer.

Then try reinstalling the MAPS software.

**If this does not work for you, please follow these steps in order:

1. Make sure that you have administrative privileges.

2. Check in the Add/Remove Programs control panel. If there is a listing (most likely not) for MAPS, remove it.

3, Make sure Java 5 (J2SE runtime environment 5) is not installed. If it is, remove it.

4. Copy javaw.exe into the root of the C: drive. With a default install of the 1.4.x JRE, this will be in C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.x\bin (replace the x with the latest version of 1.4 installed).

5. Run the MAPS installer.

MAPS Windows

Make sure MAPS is not showing in the list of programs when you go to Start/Control Panel/Add and Remove programs. If it is, uninstall it.

On the CD there is a MAPS 1.0 Java Tools folder. Run the J2SDK-~1.exe file in this folder. Reboot your computer and try installing the MAPS software again.

If this does not correct the problem, copy the javaw.exe file from C:\Program Files\Javaj2re1.4.2_07\bin to C:\. Then rerun the installer.
