Smart volleyball players know both the technical and tactical skills
Smart volleyball players know both the technical and tactical skills
These skills, called technical skills, are the fundamentals that provide each player with the tools to execute the physical requirements of the game. These skills, called tactical skills, are the bridge between practice performance and game performance. Although all these skills are important, effective teaching of the technical and tactical skills of the game still provides the foundation for successful volleyball coaching.

In youth sports today, how does one define 'having fun'?

Coaches and parents who ignore this trend and use sport to teach important life lessons provide hope for reclaiming the inherent virtues of sport participation. ” An athletic wear company, youth sports alliance, and key sports leaders formed a coalition last summer to create a set of guidelines designed to ensure more joy, better teamwork, and ...
Success is not winning
Success is not winning
Accomplishing these team goals and each athlete’s personal goals is more important than winning. To help athletes set realistic goals, you must be able to assess each athlete’s skill level. When coaches help athletes set realistic goals, athletes inevitably experience more success and feel more competent.
Technical and tactical skill development essential for softball success
Technical and tactical skill development essential for softball success
This approach can be useful in teaching the technical skills of softball, but unless coaches shape, focus and enhance the scrimmages or drills, the athletes may not successfully translate the skills to game situations, leaving coaches to ponder why their team practices better than it plays. The games approach emphasizes the use of games and minigames to provide athletes with situations that are as close to a real game as possible (Alan G. Launder, Play Practice, Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics,...
Using social media to communicate positively
Using social media to communicate positively
When we think of coaching, we think of face-to-face interaction, but of course coaches communicate by phone, through written messages, and by appearances on such media as radio and television. After several instances of college athletes communicating negative information about their coaches and fellow teammates, sports programs are placing restrictions on student-athletes’ use of social media to comment about the team. Your athletes are frequent users of social media, and you need to be ...
When to teach whole versus part practice
When to teach whole versus part practice
