Foods that are not as refined typically contain more minerals because fewer minerals are lost in processing. Minerals occur naturally in foods, are added to foods via fortification, and are obtained from supplements. When minerals occur naturally in foods, minimal processing results in a higher mineral content.
There have been tremendous advances in knowledge and application of sport nutrition, particularly in the last 15 years, and more advances are expected. The future of sport and exercise nutrition is bright. In the future, athletes may be genetically tested, and physicians and sport dietitians may use the information to tailor diets that reflect specific variant gene–nutrient interactions.
Four Human Kinetics titles are on the American Dietetic Association’s recommended reading list for CSSD candidates. As such, the Commission developed numerous specialty credentials, including certification in Sports Dietetics. Board Certified Specialists in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) apply evidence-based nutrition knowledge in exercise and sports to assess, educate, and counsel athletes and active individuals.
