We have minimized the importance of the kick in some of the strokes introduced to this point, but in strokes that use the breaststroke kick, the kick produces as much propulsion as the arms. Breaststroke Kick Drill 1. Inverted Breaststroke Kick In shallow water, place your back against the pool wall. Breaststroke Kick Drill 2. Inverted Breaststroke Kick Against Pressure Repeat breaststroke kick drill 1. Ask your instructor to stand in front of you and place one hand against the inside of ...
Rather than just hitting the ball back and forth in your next practice, ask your practice partner to hit the ball away from you. In all forms of practice, especially match practice, it angers me to see one of our pros drilling with no regard to where the ball is going or what the student should be doing next. Remember, when practicing match play it’s not the quantity of practice that matters, it’s the quality.
Having made a mistake—any kind of mistake—your immediate task is to get back on track. Stick with the past tense as you acknowledge that the mistake happened and take ownership of it. Different mistakes have different recovery times, and you will need to give yourself that time depending on the kind of mistake you made and the circumstances in which you made it.
Most people, even those diagnosed with a chronic illness (with a physician’s clearance) can exercise safely if some precautions are taken before, during, and after exercise. Carry a bottle of water or sports beverage with you during your aerobic exercise if your exercise program exceeds 45 minutes. While just about anyone can benefit from regular exercise, check with your doctor if you are taking medication and want to start an exercise program.
Training at the higher intensity is called utilization training 1 (UT1), and training at the lower intensity is called utilization training 2 (UT2). Because our athletes do so much aerobic training, we carefully specify how hard we want them to train. The athletes can recognize the transition between the two intensities, so I have tested the ranges by asking athletes to train at what they consider to be their ideal training heart rate, taking several lactate samples over the course of a ...
The Coach and Athlete Relationship Because archery is such a technical sport, “drop-in” coaching sessions are rarely effective. In most cases, the coach’s reputation will suffice as coaching credentials; however, you might not accept at face value a coach’s success for this validation or trust. Coaches need to seek out as much archery knowledge by reading the literature on the development of archery skill and consulting with more experienced coaches and archers as they can.
Naturally, individual-sport athletes and team-sport athletes have different perspectives on group work. Motivation will become hamstrung if an athlete’s primary reason for hard work becomes extrinsic rewards. The intrinsic reward of getting to know your athletes this well makes it surprisingly easy, before long, to recall individual motivation styles and provide cues, feedback, and expectations accordingly.
Junkyard sports are “real” sports and games played with the “wrong” equipment. CONCEPT AND PURPOSE OF JUNKYARD SPORTS The concept we’re calling junkyard sports is as ancient as sport itself. The inventiveness begins when people play the sports in some unusual place with some wacky piece of equipment that has nothing to do with how the sports are supposed to be played, and then they mix these sports with other sports.
As the concept of junkyard sports takes hold, a community of junkyard sports players will form around it. Because junkyard sports invite participation across ages and across abilities, this community can grow very large very quickly. They can become key organizers for your community junk-gathering efforts, co-facilitators during your junkyard sports sessions, and co-coordinators for community junkyard sports festivals.
I encourage players to initiate coach-player conferences with me as I will with them. I try to help players learn to communicate with teammates, coaches, teachers, parents, and members of the community. Assistant Coaches’ Roles I view my coaching staff as a team, just as the players are a team.
