Cooper Institute
Cooper Institute
In 1970, Kenneth H. Cooper, MD, MPH, the "Father of Aerobics," founded The Cooper Institute, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping people live longer, healthier lives. The Cooper Center Longitudinal Study (CCLS), made up of almost 100,000 patients’ data records, is one of the most highly referenced databases in the world. Because The Cooper Institute is a nonprofit organization, it relies heavily on private donations and funding from foundations and corporations to support its research...
TAHPERD 2009 & Dr. Kenneth Cooper
The Cooper Institute was started by Dr. Kenneth Cooper who happened to be presenting at the 2009 TAHPERD convention. Dr. Cooper hopes that someday NUTRIGRAM and FITNESSGRAM will be on 1 report. After Dr. Cooper’s session, Marilu Meredith (VP of the division of information technology at The Cooper Institute) brought him by our Human Kinetics booth at the conference and Cheri and I were able to meet him and get a picture taken with him.
Aerobics in Schools
Aerobics in Schools
His next target was much bigger: Dr. Kenneth Cooper, the world-renowned “Father of Aerobics” and head of the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas, Texas. After a couple calls to the Cooper Aerobics Center, Lawler was able to talk to Todd Whitthorne, a close colleague of Cooper’s (and today the president and CEO of Cooper Concepts, a subsidiary under the Cooper umbrella). As Lawler’s relationship with Cooper grew stronger, Lawler thought he’d take the next bold step and ask Cooper to speak at his...
I tested my students on all test events. Why are some of the tests not showing up on the Fitnessgram 6.0.3 report?
The Fitnessgram program tests the students’ aerobic capacity, body composition, abdominal strength and endurance, trunk extensor strength and flexibility, and upper-body strength and flexibility. The Fitnessgram report will print the test results for only one item in each category. If you test your students on more than one aerobic capacity test, for example, only the best test results will be printed.

Dutch Organizations Aim to Create Exercise Guidelines for People Living in Nursing Homes
The Dutch Association for Physical Therapy in the Geriatrics (NVFG) in cooperation with a research institute called TNO is working on a standard for exercise for older people in nursing homes and rest homes. Recent research shows that residents in nursing homes exercise for only 5 minutes a day. The question is, how much exercise do older people in institutions like nursing homes and rest homes need?
Nordic Walking
Studies have shown that Nordic walking burns more calories than regular walking. Research done by the Cooper Institute proves Nordic walking burns an average of 20 percent more calories than walking without poles. Similar to an elliptical trainer, Nordic walking uses both the upper and lower halves of the body, but Svensson says Nordic walking offers more upper-body benefits.
