The El Paso Chihuahuas

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek

October 28, 2013

Just less than a year after voters approved funding a $50 million downtown stadium, El Paso’s new Minor League Baseball team finally has a name.  Chihuahuas was selected after a community-wide vote yielded five finalists.  The name represents El Pasos spirit, loyalty, and geographical location in the Chihuahuan Desert.  The team’s colors will be red, black and tan.  A mascot and team jerseys will be unveiled at a later date.

Now that the team has been named, El Pasoans can embrace their first affiliated Triple-A baseball team in city history.  The team’s home stadium is well on its way toward completion, and will be ready for the Chihuahua’s Pacific Coast League home debut in April 2014.  More than 70% of El Pasoans were in favor of a $525 million quality of life referendums that included the stadium, new parks, an arena, and fund improvements to local museums.  It’s all good in El Paso.
