Bronx Bombers in the Offseason

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek

October 28, 2013

Even though the New York Yankees are nowhere near the World Series, and while they won’t hit the field again until Spring Training resumes next February, the team is signed on to serve as production partners with Kirmser Ponturo Group on the 2014 Broadway run of “Bronx Bombers.”  The new show is Fran Kirmser’s and Tony Ponturo’s third attempt to bring sports fans to Broadway after successful runs of “Lombardi” and “Magic/Bird.” The new Yankees-themed play, starring husband and wife actors Peter Scolari and Tracy Shayne as Yogi and Carmen Berra, will begin previews on January 10 at Circle on the Square, with the opening set for February.

The real Yankees, meanwhile, are focused on their 2014 payroll.  According to sources at team financial meetings last week, the Yankees will seek to cut payroll to $189 million while attempting to re-sign second baseman Robinson Canoe and spending as much as $300 million on free agents.
