El Paso Baseball Stadium

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek

September 30, 2013

It’s all good in El Paso, as construction continues on the team’s new downtown Minor League Baseball stadium.  The city’s financing of the stadium is capped at $64 million, as agreed upon two months ago.  Because the team owner, MountainStar Sports Group, isn’t 100% sure how much the total eventually will be, they’ve pledged to cover any expenses in excess of the public’s $64 million commitment – a true sign of a public/private partnership.  While the cost increases are caused by a variety of factors, one of them is the result of desired improvements by MountainStar Sport, including a new restaurant in the right outfield.

The baseball stadium, which will open in April 2014, was part of a transcendent bond referendum approved by voters in November 2012.  More than 70% of El Pasoans were in favor of a $525 million quality of life plan, which also will build new parks, an arena, and fund improvements to local museums.  It’s all good in El Paso.
