Safety Paramount in Youth Football

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek
September 27, 2013

When it comes to youth football, nothing is more important than safety.  Realizing this, nearly 2,800 leagues across the United States have made a commitment this fall to use USA Football’s Heads Up Football education program.  Some of the biggest youth leagues are so serious about the Heads Up Football program that they won’t let coaches on the sideline if they haven’t gone through training.  Heads Up Football is a certification program that trains youth coaches on proper equipment fitting, tackling technique, and concussion prevention.

While USA Football doesn’t have the authority to mandate Heads Up Football, youth leagues are adopting the program on a value proposition.  So far, more than 25% of all U.S. youth leagues have registered to adopt Heads Up Football in 2013, the first year of its national rollout.
