The President’s Cup

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek
September 27, 2013

The President’s Cup, which begins this week in Dublin, Ohio, represents a truly international competition with the world’s top golfers competing.  As an International Ambassador of Golf, Gary Player captained the International Team in 2003, 2005, and 2007.  In fact, the historic 2003 President’s Cup that ended in the only tie in the tournament’s history was held at the Gary Player-designed The Links at Fancourt.

According to Player, his favorite memory as a captain was the playoff in 2003 between Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, which lasted into the night.  The playoff ended with the greatest showing of sportsmanship and camaraderie, as Player and Jack Nicklaus agreed to share the Cup.  As for this year’s President’s Cup, Player feels the International team, while the underdog, has what it takes to win.  Said Player, “Nick Price is an ideal captain, great gentleman and he’ll inspire the team to a great degree and I’m looking forward to seeing it.”  Aren’t we all.
