Matt Harvey’s Endorsement Gaffe

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek
September 23, 2013

The best athlete endorsers are ones that actually enjoy using the products they promote, and they make talking about the product seem as natural as playing sports.  New York Mets rookie phenom Matt Harvey may have damaged his reputation as a pitchman after an embarrassing interview on the Dan Patrick Show.  Tired of talking about his injured elbow, Harvey was adamant about getting out a message about his sponsor Qualcomm, which is giving MLB fans the chance to win a trip to a 2014 Opening Day game.

Now Harvey’s relationship with Qualcomm is in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.  The reality is that Harvey should have been more prepared for the interview.  While his marketability might be hurt in the short run, it’s better that he learns from this mistake early in his career.
