Gary Player Design

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek

August 16, 2013

Unlike basketball and football, which have predetermined field dimensions, every golf course is different.  Perks of being a Hall of Fame golfer are the post-playing career business opportunities; in particular lucrative course design.  While several ex-golfers maintain design businesses, few are as successful as Gary Player Design.  The company has designed over 300 courses in 35 countries on five continents, including two opening this fall: The Cliffs at Mountain Park in Travelers Rest, SC, and DLF Golf and Country Club in India.  Indura Resort in Honduras is set to open in Spring 2014.

Because golf is such an international sport, Player likes to focus his efforts on emerging markets.  His company has opened 8 new courses around the world over last two years, despite the challenging global economy.  Among the countries GPD currently is designing courses in include Peru, Morocco, and South Africa.  The company is also responsible for designing the first public golf course in China.  Player is a fierce believer in creating environmentally friendly, sustainable courses, but he also emphasizes courses that are golfer-friendly, because he believes that’s the best way to grow the game.
