Wimbledon Aftermath

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek

July 5, 2013

While the 2013 Wimbledon men’s and women’s singles champions for this year’s tournament receive $2.4 million each, a 39% increase over last year, players who exited in the first three rounds of the main draw were rewarded by as much as 64% more pay, according to Bloomberg News.  Even players in the qualifying tournament received 41% more money, as did players falling in the opening round of the tournament, seeing a 62% prize increase.  All four of tennis’ Grand Slam tournaments significantly increased purses this year, primarily because of lobbying from the sport’s top stars.

The irony is that this year, the players that have the influence to bargain for more prize money, were the ones eliminated the earliest at the All-England Club.  Twelve-time Grand Slam winner Rafa Nadal was upset in the first round of this year’s tournament, and seven-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer was defeated in the second round.  Good thing they lobbied for the early round money increases.
