NFL Stadium Renovations--Jacksonville and Pittsburgh

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek

June 21, 2013

Two NFL teams are making headlines for their stadium renovation plans, but only one of those teams got the deal it was hoping for.

The Jaguars and the city of Jacksonville agreed to terms on a $63 million EverBank Field renovation that will feature the largest video boards in the world.  It’s hard to fathom, but each of the end zone screens will be longer than a football field.  The Jags are contributing $20 million to the renovation, and are responsible for any cost overruns.  The deal also makes it incredibly unlikely that the team will relocate to either Los Angeles or London any time in the near future.

Meanwhile, the Steelers are at odds with the Pittsburgh-Alleghany County Sports & Exhibition Authority over who will pay for upgrades to Heinz Field.  The issue hinges on the team’s lease with the county, and what constitutes a “capital improvement” as opposed to a “modification.”  A judge last week ruled that the Steelers haven’t proven a proposed end zone expansion meets the requirements to be considered a capital improvement.  The issue likely will end up going to trial, but the odds are stacked against the Steelers.
