El Paso: In the Spotlight

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek

March 29, 2013

Five months after passing a transformative $525 million bond referendum, El Paso is beginning to see the success of its efforts.  Forbes listed El Paso among the top U.S. Cities’ Emerging Downtowns, and the New York Times and Texas Monthly published two very positive travel reviews highlighting area dining, leisure, and entertainment offerings.

Part of the city’s “emerging downtown” is plans for a $50 million Triple-A baseball stadium, scheduled to open in time for the 2014 season.   Another reason for the city’s blossoming image is the “behind-the-scenes” work of the Greater El Paso Strategic Communications Task Force, a group of leaders and representatives of civic, community, and business organizations that have come together to collectively unfold a renewed image for El Paso to be shared both within the community and with the outside world.  For a city that used to only make national news for violence across its border, this downtown renaissance has been welcoming.
