Power 100: Rookies of the Year

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek

March 15, 2013

Rookies took the sports world by storm in 2012, resulting in four first-year players making the 2013 Bloomberg “Sportfolio” / Horrow Sports Ventures Power 100.  The highest-ranked rookie is Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, who came in at No. 33.  In addition to his strong on-field stats, RG3 had the best off-field score amongst rookies.  His awareness is particularly high for a rookie because he won the 2011 Heisman Trophy and appears in ads for Adidas, EA Sports, and Subway.

The next rookie on the Power 100 is Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout, ranking 63rd on the list.  A unanimous selection for the American League Rookie of the Year award, Trout counts Subway, J&J Snack Foods, and Nike as sponsors.

The NBA’s Rookie of the Year, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving, was the highest-ranked basketball rookie at No. 77.  Irving still has a ways to go to enhance his national awareness and marketability, but his Pepsi Max Uncle Drew commercial has generated a lot of positive PR.

The last rookie on the list is Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson, finishing No 83.  Ironically, Wilson, a third-round NFL draft pick, beat out top overall selection Andrew Luck, who couldn’t crack the top 100.  Given the success of these four athletes, next year’s crop of rookies have a high expectation to live up to.
