Power 100: Tennis Effect

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek

March 15, 2013

Men and women’s professional tennis came in at only 2% and 1% respectively on a Harris Poll of Americans’ favorite sport.  Today’s pro tennis players, however, fared much more favorably in a 2013 ranking of the most powerful athletes in sports.  Tennis players accounted for 11% of the Bloomberg “Sportfolio”/Horrow Sports Ventures 2013 Power 100 ranking of the most powerful professional athletes in the United States.

Roger Federer was the highest ranked tennis player on this year’s list, coming in at No. 5.  Despite being ahead of Federer in the ATP World Rankings, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic finished right behind him on the Power 100 at No. 6.  Federer and Djokovic were the only two tennis players making the top 10 of the list.  WTA World No. 1 Serena Williams was the top female tennis player on the list at No. 12, and the top-ranked woman overall.

Other tennis-playing Power 100 athletes were: No. 20 Maria Sharapova, No. 22 Rafael Nadal, No. 31 Andy Murray, No. 32 Victoria Azarenka, No. 57 Venus Williams, No. 79 Petra Kvitova, No. 80 Caroline Wozniacki, and No. 89 Agnieszka Radwanska.
