Rafa Nadal's New Business Venture

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek

February 22, 2013

Even though Rafael Nadal hadn’t been seen on a tennis court in seven months before his return to action in Chile, all his fans had to do to witness the Spaniard’s signature form was log into iTunes.

Developed in partnership with a video-analysis company, a new app called “Rafael Nadal Tennis Academy” offers detailed step-by-step tutorials of Nadal’s strokes, along with coaching tools that let users import footage of their own strokes and compare their technique side-by-side with Nadal and other players.

The app is the first of many products Nadal hopes to capitalize on in the wake of his break from management agency IMG Worldwide and setting up his own business. According to Forbes magazine, despite his lengthy layoff away from the public eye, Nadal made $25 million in endorsements last year from such companies as Nike, Armani, and Bacardi, as well as multiple personal appearance fees.  The move away from IMG may save him as much as $3.8 million in agency fees.
