Baseball Hall of Fameless

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek

January 11, 2013

For the first time since 1996, and only the second time in 42 years, no Major League Baseball players were voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. This was the first year on the ballot for alleged steroid users including Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Sammy Sosa, who now have up to 14 more years to be elected to Cooperstown. Because of the divisiveness surrounding whether tainted players warrant induction, The New York Times left the front page of its sports section blank.
Not electing anyone to the Hall of Fame is more than just an indictment on the Steroid era, it’s real bad for business in Cooperstown. Hall induction weekend usually accounts for 10-15% of some local businesses’ annual revenue. However, with no big-name player being enshrined, an uncharacteristically small tourist turnout is expected and could significantly hurt local merchants.
