RGIII: Jersey Boy

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek

December 21, 2012

The Number 10 jersey of Washington Redskins Quarterback Robert Griffin III has sold more than any other player’s in a single season since the NFL started tracking jersey sales on its official online store, NFLshop.com.  RGIII moved into the all-time top spot by overtaking Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre.

To ensure he fully capitalizes on sales of all other gear that captures his likeness, RGIII has created his own company, Thr3escompany, LLC and submitted applications to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for multiple trademarks, including three versions of his name and the catchphrases “Unbelievably Believable” and “Light You Up,” among others. The trademarks cover use of the phrases on clothing such as T-shirt, hats, and socks, and promotional sponsorship of sports and athletic events and activities.

Meanwhile, this could be the week that Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson breaks Eric Dickerson’s 2,105-yard single-season rushing record, set in 1984.  Peterson’s Number 28 jersey isn’t even on the list of nflshop.com’s top 25 best-sellers, but if and when he breaks Dickerson’s record, look for his jersey to break into the top ten.
