Defending the Alamo(dome)

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek

November 26, 2012

In the 20-year history of San Antonio’s Alamodome, the building has hosted the NFL, the NCAA’s Final Four, and the NBA Finals, but never a professional baseball game.  Until now.  This Spring Training, the Texas Rangers and San Diego Padres will play two exhibition games at the Alamodome.  The games will allow the Rangers to grow their fan base South Texas, while San Diego will get to play in front of “hometown fans,” since San Antonio is home to the Padres’ Double-A affiliate. The Padres also have burgeoning popularity across Texas, as the team’s Triple-A affiliate just announced plans to relocate to El Paso.

Since the iconic Alamodome doesn’t have the ideal dimensions for baseball, the Rangers turned to another iconic brand for help.  AstroTurf, which is the official synthetic turf of Major League Baseball, is designing a custom 133,000-square-foot field to cover the Alamodome floor.  More than half of the event’s 53,000 tickets will be priced at $15 or less.
