NBA Jersey Sponsorships in Jeopardy

By Rick Horrow and Karla Swatek

October 19, 2012

The plan to add sponsor patches to NBA jerseys is at least temporarily on hold after owners couldn’t agree how to divide the profits.  The concern is that big-market teams like the Knicks, Lakers, and Heat would be able to generate much more money from sponsorship sales than small-market teams like the Grizzlies, Bucks, and Jazz.

Analysis done by Joyce Julius & Associates determined jersey sponsorships could generate up to $160 million annually.  Some teams have already hired consultants to broker deals with sponsors. With so much money on the line, you have to figure owners will eventually come to some sort of conclusion.  The latest news doesn’t necessarily kill jersey sponsorships altogether, but it’s unlikely a resolution will be found before the 2013-14 season.  But one person likely happy with the dissension is NBA Commissioner David Stern, who’s on record being against jersey sponsorships.
