Founder of Starfish Aquatics Institute wins prestigious award

Jill White honored for leadership and creating a sense of community


Jill White, founder of the Starfish Aquatics Institute (SAI) and director of the Aquatics and Emergency Care Division of Human Kinetics, was recently awarded the prestigious Al Turner Memorial Commitment to Excellence Award. The award was presented by the World Waterpark Association at its 30th annual symposium in San Antonio, Texas, on October 8, 2010. It is given for leadership in aquatic excellence and creating a sense of community through collaboration, networking, partnering, and influencing growth by consistent example of business and operational excellence.

Committed to eliminating drowning and serving as an advocate for best performance, White has been active at the national and international levels in developing training programs, collaborating in drowning preventions and standards development initiatives, and writing books. She has long been recognized as one of the foremost authorities in the world on aquatic training and risk management. White founded SAI, one of the five top aquatics certification agencies in the world, in 1999 to meet a need for quality education in partnership with aquatic facilities.

“We are proud of Jill and are delighted that one of the largest aquatics associations in the world has bestowed its most prestigious honor on her,” stated Leslie Donavan, President and CEO of SAI. “Jill has devoted her life to bringing the entire aquatics community together in an effort to achieve the highest standards. This award recognizes her selfless work on behalf of the industry.”

Brian Holding, President of Human Kinetics, the world’s leading publisher for the activities field, noted that White was named one of the top 100 professionals in the aquatics industry by Aquatics International in both 2003 and 2004.

“Jill is consistently recognized by Aquatics International as one of the 25 most powerful people in aquatics, and she brings that expertise and knowledge of the industry to every partnership she has created in her efforts to educate and promote safety,” Holding said.
