New coaching journal combines research and practice

Champaign, IL—The impact of coaches is evident around the world, be it in the huge sums paid to those in popular sports at the elite level or in the strong response of communities and even entire countries when inappropriate actions are taken by coaches at the youth level. Without a doubt, sport coaching in modern times is a serious endeavor. Fortunately, a wealth of knowledge exists to enable those who engage in it, study it, and arrange for it as administrators to better understand it.

Soon coaches will have the help of a new resource: International Sport Coaching Journal (ISCJ). ISCJ is a joint venture of the International Council for Coaching Excellence (ICCE) (formerly International Council for Coach Education) and American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) that will be published by Human Kinetics. Its mission is toadvance the profession of coaching through research articles, informative essays, experiential accounts, and systematic applications that enhance the education, development of knowledge, leadership, and best practices of coaches. In short, ISCJ will seek to convey today’s art and science of coaching through a perfect blend of relevant studies, technical insights, examples of coaching methods employed around the world, front-line stories, and thought-provoking commentaries.

The first edition of ISCJ will debut in January 2014. An ISCJ website will soon be available through HK’s main site at www.humankinetics.com for subscription information and further details.

ICCE is a global organization with a home office in Leeds, England, that seeks to make coaching an accepted profession and to enhance the quality of coaching at every level of sport. The ICCE (www.icce.ws) believes that international collaboration and exchange can enhance coaching development and help coaches give athletes around the world a chance to pursue excellence.

ICCE president John Bales says his organization is “very excited about working with HK and AAHPERD to produce a journal that will bring together coaches, coach educators and researchers, to add to the depth of knowledge on applied coaching.”

Founded in 1885, AAHPERD is an alliance of five national associations serving 20,000 members with headquarters in Reston, Virginia. The organization aims to advance professional practice and promote research related to health and physical education, physical activity, and sport. With the inception of ISCJ, AAHPERD (www.aahperd.org)   will discontinue publishing its Journal of Coaching Education.

AAHPERD chief executive officer Paul Roetert emphasizes, “It is critical for all coaches to be properly informed and trained to provide positive sport experiences for their athletes. Through this new journal, AAHPERD and its partners will combine our coaching education resources to better equip coaches around the world to effectively fulfill their important role.”

The ICCE and AAHPERD have assembled an esteemed group of 10 professionals engaged in coaching, coaching education, and coaching research from 6 countries to serve as the journal’s editorial board. The ISCJ’s co-editors, one based in the United States and the other in Europe, have similar expertise as well as extensive contacts in the field and substantial experience in preparing manuscripts for publication.

Human Kinetics, with its corporate center in Champaign, Illinois, is the world’s leading information provider in sport, fitness, health, and exercise science. As one of 27 HK journals, ISCJ will be published quarterly and will complement the company’s extensive list of coaching resources and coaching education services.
