Below are abstracts from the 7th World Congress on Aging and Physical Activity. The theme for 2008’s event was "Active Aging: Focus on Longevity and Physical Activity." These abstracts were published in the July 2008 supplement of the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity.

Physical Activity Improves Adaptive Locomotion in Parkinson’s Disease Patients
Some studies revealed that specific physical activity programs can improve the gait pattern over even surfaces in Parkinson’s disease patients. However, little is known about the impact of a multimode physical activity program on the adaptive locomotion of these patients. Thus, the purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of a multimode physical activity program focusing on aerobic capacity, flexibility, strength, coordination and balance on gait parameters during obstacle
Copy of Exercise Your Independence: Functional Fitness for Older Adults
Functional fitness (muscular strength and power, muscular endurance, balance, and flexibility) emphasizes getting more of the body involved in a move, with multiple muscle and joint activities that combine upper- and lower-body movements. The focus of functional fitness is on building a body capable of doing real-life activities in real-life positions.

Adapting Tests and Training to Demented and Very Old Adults
Generally, it is well-known that aerobic and strength training are effective even in old age. But there are certain conditions to be met when tests and training shall be feasible and successful in real environments. Therefore, the present symposium will discuss special interventions, procedures, devices and their results not only for the elderly but for the old.
