If you are looking for a new bike or want to upgrade your current bike, write down the answers the following questions so you can discuss your options at the bike shop. Consider entry-level road bikes, often referred to as sport, fitness, or comfort bikes (see figure 5.1), which are suited for everything from commuting to centuries. A touring bike, however, which is designed a bit differently from a racing bike, is generally more comfortable because the rider sits more upright.
We present two examples: an 8-week program and a 15-week program. An endurance ride of 2:00 to 2:30 (8-week program) or 1:30 to 2:30 (15-week program) in the first week increasing to 5:15 to 6:30 in both programs. The 15-week program starts with 3:00 to 5:10 of riding the first week, slightly less than the 8-week program, and builds more slowly.
If you are using a heart rate monitor, keep in mind that your heart rate may be elevated compared with what you experience on training rides, so you may be better off using perceived exertion as a guide. Riding with a group increases the fun; however, pay attention to your ride even during a fun conversation. Be cautious when riding in a pace line with unfamiliar riders who may not know the protocol.
