Appendix 3. Guidelines for Character Coding

General Guidelines

Equations

If a book has a lot of math and equations in it, the DE or ME will inform you on the copyediting transmittal form. Use the following guidelines for coding them.

Let's face it, equations can be very time consuming and a royal pain for everyone involved. When in doubt as to the best way to handle them, please discuss it with the DE, ME, or ESM. There is no sense in unnecessary coding equations if another method is preferable.

Codes to Use With Numeric Keypad and ALT Key

Be sure NUM LOCK key is on. Press ALT and 4-digit code at the same time. Then release the ALT key and the special character will appear.

Foreign Characters/Accents/Diacrytical Marks

Note: The Web software used for this online style guide cannot create some of the accents and diacrytical marks. In these cases, only descriptions of the special characters are provided. For examples of characters, consult the hard copy of the HK style guide.

* Where [letter] is indicated, the accent mark is available for all letters. If the letter is to be capital use the shift key plus the leter. If a specific letter is shown, the acdent applies only to that letter.

**These characters do not translate over to the Mac; please code them by keying the coding indicated IMMEDIATELY AFTER the letter it applies to (e.g., V\od\O2max).
