Welcome!

Welcome to the Continuing Education for Coaches store! Through a partnership between the American Sport Education Program (ASEP) and Michigan State University (MSU) and its Institute for the Study of Youth Sports, K-12 faculty-coaches, graduate students, and college coaches can earn continuing education credit by taking ASEP online courses through nationally recognized and respected MSU.

As a faculty-coach, you need to earn continuing education credits to maintain your teaching certification. Through the arrangement with MSU, you have the opportunity to take MSU Coaching [Sport] Technical and Tactical Skills online courses through the university and earn MSU College of Education and Michigan Department of Education CEUs—credit you need for recertification and for moving up the pay scale. Plus, the instruction you gain will only help improve your performance as a coach and enhance the sport experience for your athletes.

In awarding CEUs, MSU follows CEU guidelines developed by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). Given that each state board has different requirements for teacher licensure, certification, and CEU courses, we encourage you to check with your district or state Department of Education to ensure CEUs from MSU and the Michigan Department of Education are accepted by your organization.

Process for Purchasing Online Courses and Securing CEUs

1. Purchase your course.

Click on the course of your choice from the list and complete the purchasing process. After purchasing your course, you will have immediate access to it. However, online courses are supplemented by texts and in some cases CDs containing video. These materials will be sent to you within five to seven business days. Course seat time takes into consideration the time required for reading the accompanying textbook.

2. Take your course.

MSU Coaching [Sport] Technical and Tactical Skills online courses require 35 hours to complete (time takes into consideration reading the accompanying text), so you’ll access your course several times in order to complete it.

  • To access your course, visit the Human Kinetics Education Center at http://education.humankinetics.com .
  • Sign in and click on the My Courses tab.
  • Click on the course text link to access your course.

3. Take the course test.

You have two options for completing the course test:

  • You can access the test at any time from within the course; just click the Course Test tab from the left-hand navigation menu. Many students find it beneficial to complete the test questions that correspond with the course unit that they just completed while the information is fresh in their minds. Just as you work your way through the course in segments, you complete the test in segments. If using this method, you just need to be sure to complete all of the questions in a given unit and click Submit to ensure your answers have been saved. After completing the final unit’s test questions, click Submit Test and you’ll receive immediate results.
  • Your other option is to take the test all in one sitting after you’ve gone through the entire course. You can access the test from within the course or follow the instructions for accessing your course and click the Test tab.

4. Submit your CEU request form to Michigan State University.

Remember, you must pass the test (80 percent or better is considered passing) and meet the required number of seat hours for your course in order to attain MSU CEUs. You will be provided a link on your test feedback screen that takes you to a CEU request form. The final step in completing this form is to check the electronic signature box required by MSU and the Michigan State Board of Education. Once you have completed the form, you are ready to forward it electronically to MSU. We also recommend that you make a copy of the signed form for your personal records. You will receive documentation of CEUs earned from MSU within six to eight weeks of receipt of the form.

In awarding CEUs, MSU follows CEU guidelines developed by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). Given that each state board has different requirements for teacher licensure, certification, and CEU courses, we encourage you to check with your district or state Department of Education to ensure CEUs from MSU and the Michigan State Board of Education are accepted by your organization.
