Enhance the efforts of our fast-paced marketing department by implementing marketing plans through multiple channels including e-mail, social media, website, direct mail, and organizational outreach. Create and edit marketing copy and maintain and add content to assigned sections of the website. Excellent proofreading and organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines are a must. A bachelor's degree and relevant work experience in business, marketing, or related field is required.
The role of the marketing associate (MA) is to assist the marketing managers and marketing director. The MA performs a variety of project management, website, administrative, and staff support tasks. These include implementing and assessing the results of direct mail, e-mail, web, and space advertising projects; maintaining and updating the HK website; developing ads, fliers, e-mail campaigns, and marketing copy for HK products; providing additional staff support to maintain intra- and inter-departmental operations; researching mailing lists, publicity outlets, and Internet marketing opportunities; and assuming responsibility for other special marketing projects as assigned.
1. WEIGHT: 15%. Manage day-to-day marketing and publicity tasks for all assigned products, including e-mail campaigns, promotional fliers, journal ads, author correspondence, press release planning, promotional quotes, and social media. These assignments include:
a. Organize/update records used in marketing planning, implementation, and analysis (mpsched).
b. Be proficient in Microsoft Publisher and able to create standard promotional fliers from templates or create other special fliers as necessary.
c. Work with marketing graphic designers to create HK journal ads. Ensure that ads are scheduled on a timely basis in all HK journals.
d. Review Author Marketing Questionnaires and follow up in a timely manner on any marketing or publicity opportunities identified there.
e. Provide each author or editor with a marketing/sales/publicity plan before their book is in print.
f. Assist marketing managers in publicity efforts, including press releases. Monitor publications for new reviews of HEP products. Read reviews and select relevant quotes to post to Web site and use in future marketing pieces.
g. Engage in social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Linked In to build customer relationships and drive traffic to HK website.
2. WEIGHT: 25%. Maintain and expand content available on the HK website, including development and posting of product information, merchandising features, banner ads, articles, excerpts, sample pages, video clips, author interviews, etc. This includes:
a. Continuously monitor assigned stores and make consistent updates to merchandising features, banner ads, and More to Explore articles. Periodically check carousals and links to ensure everything is functioning correctly. Submit tech requests when fixes are necessary.
b. Create merchandising features and/or banner ads for new products, events, news items, journals, or anything else of merit.
c. Maintain product pages on HK website and monitor HK’s presence on other key sites such as Amazon.com and Barnes&Noble.com. Ensure information is properly supplied to and hosted by those vendors.
d. Categorize products to relevant stores when they are ready to go live on the site.
e. Load excerpts, sample pages, and video clips to product pages and stores. Create necessary links and relationships among related items.
f. Work with authors (and sometimes in-house staff) to provide content for the site, including written, video, or audio interviews; blogs; or articles on relevant topics.
3.WEIGHT: 15%. Plan and/or implement direct mail promotions or space advertising as assigned by marketing manager or marketing director, including flier mailings, sales letters, catalogs, and brochures, according to methods detailed in the current marketing procedures manual.
a. Consider all elements related to planning direct marketing pieces, including target audience, potential mailing lists, physical specifications of marketing piece, and budget.
b. Lead implementation process by pulling appropriate copy, submitting project to marketing design, serving as proofreader, and researching and ordering mailing lists or reserving advertising space.
c. Work closely with marketing designers and positively collaborate to create functional and attractive marketing pieces.
d. Coordinate in-house mailings with purchasing and mailroom staff.
4. WEIGHT: 10%. Plan and implement e-mail marketing campaigns through our current e-mail provider, Lyris. Work with marketing data manager, marketing graphic design, marketing manager, or marketing director as needed to schedule campaigns, develop campaign messages, prepare and test messages, and report on results.:
a. Determine appropriate mailing lists and submit list requests at least two weeks in advance.
b. Create e-mail message for approval by marketing manager and director. For newsletters, work with marketing managers to brainstorm topics/themes and research current articles to include.
C. Enter any special offers into the Affino backend for the website and test before the campaign is sent.
D. Send message on scheduled day and report on results in monthly reports.
E. In instances when a campaign must be sent to an external list, work with the tech group to help deploy the message through HK systems.
5. WEIGHT: 10%. Work with freelance writers to develop marketing copy for HK products, consulting with marketing managers and marketing director as needed to ensure that copy objectives are met and copy package quality is optimal.
A. Attend ITMP meeting to become familiar with key features and benefits of product. Make notes of key areas to emphasize, and pass along all relevant information to freelancer prepare first draft of copy. Or, write and update copy for new editions.
B. Confirm that key points and benefits are addressed in the copy. Send original copy back to freelancer for corrections if necessary.
C. Format copy package according to appropriate guidelines. Add order information, also available as ISBNs, table of contents, back cover copy, e-mail copy, short/page description, ancillary copy, keywords, and any previous quotes to the copy package.
D. Oversee the routing process and incorporate relevant changes throughout the entire copy at each stage.
E. When copy is finalized, submit for entry into PIM and HK backend.
6. WEIGHT: 10%. Stay abreast of changes in assigned subject areas and markets, including the higher education market. Contact related organizations for associate partnerships or exchange opportunities.
A. Research and review industry related publications, e-newsletters, websites, or other sources to identify current happenings and trends in assigned subject areas and markets.
B. Assist in the preparation of sales analysis, market analysis, and market research reports as requested by marketing manager or director.
C. Prepare course adoption fliers for sales staff.
D. Identify potential association partnerships and build relationships with associates by periodically contacting them to offer assistance or suggestions.
E. Contact relevant tradeshows or conferences that HK is not attending to explore exchange opportunities.
7. WEIGHT: 10%. Fulfill other duties as assigned including special projects or additional support to the marketing manager and director.
A. Work with marketing managers or marketing director to determine best course of action for any special promotional opportunities or requests identified by authors.
B. Coordinate special projects as assigned.
C. Assist with miscellaneous tasks that arise promptly and efficiently.
Must be able to communicate effectively in English, in verbal and written form, as part of regular interaction with other staff. Must conduct work in a helpful and courteous manner in providing support services to co-workers throughout the day. Must be able to work cooperatively and independently within a team environment to fulfill job responsibilities and help marketing department meet its objectives. Must be able to take direction well and follow assigned tasks through to completion with minimal supervision. Must also be willing and able to ask appropriate questions and seek help from others when appropriate to complete job duties effectively.
Must have excellent organizational skills. High degree of accuracy in work and attention to detail is essential. Must have excellent proofreading skills and basic ability to edit copy effectively to prescribed lengths. The MA must be able to manage multiple priorities effectively, use problem-solving skills to determine best course action needed to meet job objectives, and take initiative to identify tasks/projects to be done and problems to be solved in order to fulfill job duties and help achieve overall department objectives. Must also be able to develop effective and efficient systems for managing routine support tasks.
The MA must have manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer or typewriter keyboard with minimum efficiency equal to 40 wpm typing ability with 90% accuracy, and be able to manage stress effectively to fulfill demands of job when heavy workload, deadlines, or other common work pressures occur.
Standard office environment.
Must be able to operate computer keyboard, photocopier, telephone, fax machine, calculator, and other standard office equipment.
An associate's or bachelor's degree in Marketing, Advertising, Business, Journalism, or related business or communications field is required. Knowledge of Kinesiology or Exercise Science programs also a plus.
1. Experience using computers for basic word processing, databases, and spreadsheet applications.
2. Ability to write basic business correspondence accurately and according to HK standards for format and professionalism.
3. Ability to perform light editing of and minor revisions to existing marketing copy to fit a variety of standardized formats for promotional literature.
4. Ability to upload content and perform basic website maintenance.
5. Ability to proofread correspondence and promotional literature to ensure that copy is accurate and complete.
6. Professional experience in advertising, marketing, public relations, business, or communication-related field is preferred.
