Opportunities at Human Kinetics

Human Kinetics publishes more than 100 books and more than 20 journals annually. We've also expanded our operation to that of an "information packager", utilizing whatever media source can best deliver the information to the consumer. Our objective is to make a positive difference in the quality of life of all people by promoting physical activity. We do so by seeking out the foremost experts in a particular field and assisting them in delivering the most current information in the best format. Additional information about the history, organizational structure, and future goals of HK can be found in the About HK section of the web site.

Benefits of Working at HK

HK attributes its phenomenal growth and success to the people of Human Kinetics-a well-prepared team of information specialists. The philosophy of balanced living is reflected in the benefits and facilities provided to our employees.

Our main facility in Champaign includes an outdoor basketball court, an outdoor tennis court, and fitness club. Employees are encouraged to use these amenities before, during, and after work. We have an onsite cafeteria that serves healthy and tasty meals each morning and afternoon. In addition, two nights a week, employees can opt to take meals home for themselves or their families. The cafeteria is subsidized so the cost to each employee is about the price they would pay for the ingredients of the meal (without the work!).

Living in Champaign County

Champaign County is home to about 175,000 people, Champaign-Urbana (the "twin" cities), and the University of Illinois. While nearly 89% of the land is farmland, approximately 80% of the county's residents live in urban areas. Champaign County provides a combination of a peaceful rural setting, the cultural benefits of a major university, and the commerce profile of a much larger city. A recent article in Newsweek ranked Champaign-Urbana as one of the top ten high-tech cities in the world. Additional attractions of the Champaign-Urbana area include the Krannert Center for Performing Arts; the Krannert Art Museum; Assembly Hall, which hosts sporting events, concerts, and other major events; Parkland College; local theaters; malls; abundant trees and parks; and Big Ten college sporting events.

The beauty of the Central Illinois prairie can be seen in the changing seasons. This is "big sky" country, where temperatures range from an average low in January of 16°F to an average high in July of 85°F with annual precipitation (including melted snowfall) of about 40 inches. This climate makes Champaign County one of the richest agricultural areas in the world.

Relatively "information rich," Champaign County is noted for one of the highest public library book per capita ratios in the world. The county has a very active work force, with a 4.5% unemployment rate (below the state and national averages). The largest employers are the University of Illinois, Kraft General Foods, Carle Hospital and Carle Clinic, Provena Covenant Medical Center, and Supervalu Foods.

The university campus is ranked "one of the five most-wired U.S. schools" by Yahoo and Peterson's. It is the birthplace of Mosaic, the forerunner to Netscape. The University's highly ranked engineering program and the presence of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology have created a flourishing environment to hundreds of software companies, earning the Twin Cities its nickname, "Silicon Prairie."
