The City Council of Santana promoted the VIII Forum of Health and Physical Activity in an edition that is dedicated to the theme “Active Ageing” with several panels of experts and interventions in health care. The initiative started with a conference entitled "Active Aging: Make Exercise a Priority" led by doctoral student Maria Machado.
The communications were organized by thematic tables such as "The Dynamics of Education in the Development of Healthy Lifestyles," "The Aged in Society," "The Role of Spirituality in the Welfare of the Elderly," "Sport and Health Organizations," "Prevention and Quality of Life," and "Health in the Elderly."
The opening ceremony was attended by several official entities such as the Regional Director of Education, João Estanqueiro, and the Mayor of Santana, Rui Moses among others. This forum was subordinated to the theme of "Active Ageing," since 2012 is the European Year of Active Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity. Its objective was to raise awareness, disseminate good practice, and encourage policy makers and stakeholders at all levels to facilitate active aging.
After two days dominated by the theoretical component with over two-dozen interventions starring many guest speakers, the last afternoon was dedicated to a practical class. The initiative of the Municipality of Santana—reserved for the last day a class of PMX—was held in the sports center of São Roque do Faial. A group of about 70 people were challenged to walk through a pedestrian path. The path of Faja in São Roque do Faial included an increase of about 700 steps after passing the well of Fajã in Ribeira de São Roque do Faial. This great effort ended with a friendly meeting in the early afternoon.
