The Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging (CCAA) was pleased to have been chosen by the International Society for Aging and Physical Activity to host the 6th World Congress on Aging and Physical Activity. This Congress was held in London, Ontario, Canada from August 3rd to 7th, 2004. It was the first time that this prestigious event has been held in Canada. The theme selected by the host committee for this congress was "Research to Action for an Aging Society".

This World Congress was conducted in collaboration with Health Canada, American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), International Association of Gerontology (IAG), Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP), Canadian Association on Gerontology (CAG), Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Active Living Coalition for Older Adults (ALCOA).

This event is held every four years. Previous congresses have been held in West Point, N.Y., USA (1984), Budapest, Hungary (1988), Jyväskylä, Finland (1992), Heidelberg, Germany (1996) and Orlando, Florida, USA (1999).

The World Congress is an opportunity for the world community to share the latest research findings in the area of aging and physical activity. It also introduces leading edge methods on developing, implementing, and evaluating physical activity programs for older adults. The World Congress is targeted towards researchers, practitioners, organizations, older adults and the general public who are interested in promoting active and healthy lifestyles for adults.

CCAA- Scientific Proceedings from the 6th World Congress on Aging and Physical Activity

The Scientific Proceedings highlight international research initiatives and programs promoting the necessity of physical activity and exercise for all older adults including the robust, restorative and the frail. Over 50 scientific papers address topics from basic, applied, clinical, epidemiological and psychosocial sciences and over 100 presentations have been archived on a special enclosed CD-ROM. Both the papers and presentations within this publication will be of relevance to anyone interested in the health and well-being of older adults. This publication will hopefully act as a catalyst to generate interest in this area of research and foster further international collaborations throughout the physical activity and aging research community.
