The benefits of physical activity are extensively documented in the scientific literature. However, documentation alone does not necessarily translate into increased physical activity levels. Providers, including senior centers and retirement communities, need scientifically-based and easy-to-instruct programs that translate the research into practice, and ultimately increase physical activity among older adults.
This presentation will make available the First Step to Active Health Kit, designed to define a standardized approach and an inexpensive, turn-key program to promote physical activity among older adults in both community- and home-based exercise settings. The FSAH Kit is now available in a variety of languages including English, Japanese, and Korean. The FSAH Kit offers scientifically-based physical activity programs to improve health and functional ability in older adults by addressing the four core areas of physical fitness, namely cardiovascular, strength, flexibility, and balance training. Modifications of these programs for frail, diseased, and disabled older adults will also be discussed.
